Pop-sick & Instrumentality

Pop-sick and Instrumentality are the combination of my final project at George Fox University. While conceived simply for the class initially, I made it clear to my professor that this was something I didn’t intend on just doing within the semester, and that it was a personal passion project I would be continuing to pursue and evolve long after graduating. With his green light and support, I began designing for a brand idea I’ve long since desired to create.

Ideation Stage

Pop-sick was the chosen idea for an apparel brand which I hope to one day make into a legitamate product. Creating apparel was my first passion when stepping into the graphic design world, and played into both my love of fashion and influence from my favorite forms of media.

Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

Basic Apparel

When I first began to come up with ideas, I was drawing from two main places for my concepts: music and anime. The name for the specific line I wanted to do initially, as its own thing within the brand of Pop-sick, was a series of shirts where the art is inspired by song lyrics. The name I chose for the line was Instrumentality. I chose this name as a combination of influences, which is why the logo is separated by color choices. “Instument” plays into the music side, “Mentality” plays into the effect the lyrics have on me and my mind, and the term itself is also a reference to “The Human Instrumentality Project” from one of my favorite anime series, whose art style was a big inspiration to me: Neon Genesis Evangelion

When choosing the songs I wanted to create art for, I went with ones that had a very specific meaning to me at the time. When I find life getting me down, I often turn to music, and these were two songs by my favorite band which I have long adored. They not only have a special place in my memory, but they are ones which I listen to and can’t help but get my imagination flowing. The music and lyrics give me ideas of art and images I love trying to bring to life. It lets me make something new and unique out of an inspiration source that I love. For these original designs, I made collage pieces for the songs “Here is Gone” and “Black Balloon” by the band Goo Goo Dolls. Then I simply added some finishing pieces like logos, song credit text, and sleeve text for the sweatshirt.
